Fight the Fat: Low Calorie Foods for Getting Fit in 2013

By: Finance Foodie

It’s January – a new year, which means new resolutions! After two weeks of indulging in nothing but fried meat and potatoes in Columbia, my flabby body is ready to get lean and mean again. Feeling inspired by some of the healthy goodies I saw at Philly's Food and Nutrition Conference, here are some of the treats I will be eating get back into fighting shape again.

Contessa World Cuisine Sesame Chicken Frozen Meal
380 calories / serving (2 servings per bag)
As a busy grad student, the last thing I want to do after coming home from a long day of class is spend another hour cooking dinner. Therefore, I rely on Contessa World Cuisine’s Sesame Chicken frozen entrée for the days where I want to eat quick but healthy. This entree is made with quality ingredients but much simpler to prepare (just toss in a pan for ten minutes). Furthermore, the sesame chicken is not only delicious but also doesn't break the calorie bank (the sauce – which contains a bulk of the calories – is individually packed so you can control the level of intake).

Kettle Brand Tias! Tortilla Chips
150 calories / 1oz serving
I’m a big time snacker – especially when watching my favorite TV shows on the couch. It’s super easy to overdo mindless eating – which is why my go to snack is Tias! Tortilla Chips in Zesty Ranch. Made with organic corn finished with a sassy blend of buttermilk, green onion and garlic, these chips are packed with flavor so they’re mouth-ready straight out of the bag—no extra (caloric) dipping sauce required!

Koru Yoghurt – Strawberry and Goji
190 calories / 5.3 oz container
The recently introduced Koru’s creamery style yoghurt is made with wholesome, real ingredients – including real milk, cream and fruit. It has a light and silky texture that feels a lot more decadent and satisfying than the 190 calories per cup. My personal favorite is the cool and creative Strawberry and Goji yoghurt, but the other four flavors are just as fun and festive.

Quaker Real Medley’s Oatmeal - Summer Berry Oatmeal+
250 calories / container
Packed with multi-grains and chunks of real fruit – sweet strawberries, red delicious raspberries, and whole blueberries, Quaker Oats’ Real Medleys Summer Berry Oatmeal+ deserves the Michelin star for all oatmeals. I first discovered this gourmet breakfast item at the Philly Food and Nutrition Conference last fall and have been addicted ever since. Plus, the Real Medleys comes in a convenient, individual serving size package, so all I need to do is add water, microwave and enjoy in my morning class (to the envy of all my classmates, obviously)!
