Seventh Generation Green Cleaning Products

Welcome to Finance Foodie Presents: Pioneering Products. These series brings you the exclusive 411 at the new and cool products that have recently come into the marketplace!

"So fresh, so clean..."

When I was a youngster, my mom and I would wake up early every Sunday morning to clean the house. Now I know most kids would rather sleep in on a Sunday morning, but I always enjoyed these mornings that I spent hanging out with my mom - not only was it great bonding time for us, but we were also rewarded with a spotlessly clean living environment!

Even though to me, a clean home is a happy home, I was always irked about how toxic and environmentally unfriendly some of those cleaning products my mom and I used - no matter how (fake) "fresh rainwater" scented. This was especially apparent when I developed a rather unattractive rash after going gloveless while using a kitchen cleaner to clean my kitchen stove in Boston (Moral of this story: always wrap it up...in any situation!)

"Dishing Up Vermont" Cookbook Signing

"In the wooded forest..."

As you may recall, one of my New Year's resolutions was to cook more (now that I have a spacious kitchen and actual pots and pans in Boston). I had every intention of following through on this (and even went as far as writing Post-it notes to myself taped to my fridge!), but as life goes, work got busy and takeout from the local pizza joint just seemed so...easy after a long day crunching numbers. Sigh!

Free Cone Day at Ben and Jerry's!

Welcome to Finance Foodie’s new series: Fiscally Fun Freebies. Working in the finance field has taught me a lot about hardwork, the value of a dollar, and the importance of saving for a rainy day. This series will bring you the scoop on all the free food and product offerings from around the nation – because who doesn’t love a truly free lunch!?!

More than three decades ago a small, mom & pop ice cream stand started in the spring in Burlington, Vermont featuring the best homemade ice cream money can buy, loaded with chunks and swirls, and trying to operate as a business who cared about more than just making a profit. That shop was Ben and Jerry's.

It's free cone day on March 23, 2010 at participating scoop shops from noon to 8pm, so you'll know where to find me after work!

The City Island Diet with Andy Garcia

 by: Anne M. Raso

We caught up with legendary actor Andy Garcia at the junket for his new dysfunctional family comedy City Island - a film was shot entirely "on location", and it seems that Garcia along with cast and crew visited a lot of the local eateries! For those of you who live outside the New York tri-state area, the City Island enclave is famous for serious fishing and fish-based eateries.

“Baila la calle de noche...”

Hola readers! Pardon the multiple languages in the post, but I am in the process of prepping for my escape to sunny Nicaragua, as the New England winter doldrums have left me paler than Edward Cullen. Besides practicing my Espanol and dusting off my sombrero, I’ve also been eating healthier and working out more - there will be no heavy coats and sweaters to hide the winter flabbies in 90 degree F temps!

In regards to “eating healthier”, the mere mention of those two words immediately spring up visions of dry chicken breasts and steamed bland veggies – a Nightmare on Elm Street for a food lover like me! Luckily, the geniuses at the food companies around the world have become more proactive in creating yummy but healthy food items for those of us who want to have our cake and eat it too.

“You got the kind of lovin' that can be so smooth …”

With the brutally cold and windy winter season in the Northeast, my skin has literally been battered liked fried chicken. I kid you not my readers – the constant environmental volatility (going from the skin biting winds outdoors to the moisture sucking heater filled indoors) have left me worried that my twenties are starting to fast track into my forties.

A Conversation with Chef Jacques Van Staden of Celebrity Cruises

By: Anne M. Raso

This spring, Celebrity Cruises welcomes the third Solstice class ship, Celebrity Eclipse, and Jacques Van Staden, VP of Culinary Operations, recently spoke to us about Qsine, the new fine dining venue on the ship which has a quite hip style and design!

Interestingly enough, at Qsine, there are no appetizers, entrees or course dividers. It is just food, intended to be shared and delivered as it is ready (AKA “family style”)!

The wine menu will be presented to diners on an Apple iTouch via an app called the Qsine Wine Waiter. This app brings up roughly 100 bottles available divided onscreen by each wine type with a thorough description! Van Staden states, “Nothing has ever been done before with Apple and this is something we are working on very diligently with Apple for the (April) opening.”

Van Staden gave financefoodie.com the back-story on Qsine: “The project has been in production for a year-and-a-half—and it is the culmination of a lot of epiphanies I had during that time…. we are enhancing the Celebrity culinary reputation. We keep it fresh and want to provide a different type of culinary experience. It is a global influenced cuisine—but none of the dishes are actually fusion!”
