<br />
Last week, I attended a lunch hosted by <a href="http://themoms.com/">The Mom's</a>, a modern motherhood group, and <a href="http://spinmaster.com/">Spin Master</a> toys (best known for their adorable <a href="https://www.spinmaster.com/brand.php?brand=cat_hatchimals">Hatchimals</a> eggs) celebrating superstar dancer / actress Jenna Dewan's new book <i><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Gracefully-You-Finding-Balance-Everyday/dp/1501191519">Gracefully You</a></i>. The event was held at the LES hotspot <a href="https://www.mrpurplenyc.com/">Mr. Purple</a>, a rooftop bar located in the Hotel Indigo known for its outdoor pool and hip patrons.<br />

I had been wanting to check out Mr. Purple for a while now, as my younger and cooler co-workers constantly rave about their weekends at joint, so I thought this was the perfect excuse to visit. I really love the loft like space, the abundance of seating options both indoor and outside (because who wants to stand for hours on end) and the industrial yet artistic feel. While I probably didn't get the full experience of the bustling nightlife crowd, there was something refreshing about talking babies with the mom influencers, mocktail in hand, under the disco ball, with a expansive view of downtown Manhattan.<br />

During the Q&A session with The Moms (Denise Albert and Melissa Gerstein), Jenna, who is currently expecting her second child, gracefully (pun intended!) answered questions about her current pregnancy (she's more tired and nauseated this time around) and discussed how to feel better, focus on what’s important, and maintain a sense of balance while juggling the demands of life (sounds like everyone who lives in NYC needs to read this book!). She even busted out a dance move with The Moms - impressive especially when you are carrying another human in your belly!<br />

At the end of the event, all the attendees were gifted Jenna's book and some Hatchimals toys to take home. <br />
This past weekend, the Mister and I found ourselves hungry, cold and wet from the rain in the Union Square are during lunch hour. We were going to head back home but then found ourselves passing by <a href="https://pasta-eater.com/">Pasta Eater</a>, a newly opened Italian bistro that specialize in a variety of authentic Italian pasta dishes made with their freshly made (in-house) pasta. As the restaurant looked so cozy and inviting versus the dreary weather outside, we decided to sample the goods and head on in.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Km9OL-S2SNw/Xa3nWZ0Ij8I/AAAAAAAAgPQ/kKHL885ewhg1snAz0bavU-d5Uz6EO_G8QCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_7588%2B%25281%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Km9OL-S2SNw/Xa3nWZ0Ij8I/AAAAAAAAgPQ/kKHL885ewhg1snAz0bavU-d5Uz6EO_G8QCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/IMG_7588%2B%25281%2529.jpg" width="480" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #351c75;">Pasta Eater </span></b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<a name='more'></a>Upon entrance, Pasta Eater feels like a warm family establishment that reminded me of the restos I dined at during my summer vacation in Italy. After noshing on some complimentary bread and olive oil, the Mister and I decided to split the burrata ($16), a lovely and generously portioned dollop of soft cheese on top arugula pesto and served with diced tomatoes. The burrata was excellent in taste - nicely firm on the outside but soft and creamy once you cut inside.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #351c75;">Burrata</span></b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
For our pastas, I decided to go with the Pappardelle with wild boar ragu and black truffle ($19), while the Mister chose the Cacio e Pepe ($20) served from a Pecorino cheese wheel. Let's start with the pastas - beyond superb, cooked perfectly al dente and obviously made with quality ingredients (no box pasta taste here)! The Pappardelle dish was filled with hearty chunks of well seasoned meat and the truffle gave the dish a nice smokey aroma. The Cacio e Pepe was simple but very well executed - plus we both enjoyed the awesome table side presentation of the pasta. Two wonderful and filling dishes for our stomach and hearts.<br />

Sadly we didn't save any room for dessert, so we will for sure be back again (the Green Tea Creme Brulee is already on my list). Pasta Eater is a delightful addition to the Union Square area and I look forward to trying more from their vast selection of top flight pastas in the future.<br />

<br />
Spooky Season is upon us, which means two things for me; binge-watching Hocus Pocus and Halloween!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aRJTtSGMvp8/XbLzQDsd4dI/AAAAAAAAgRA/MCGishSqF_shZvN-sm1W3MO5QyWeSKp7wCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/pumpkin2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="409" data-original-width="491" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aRJTtSGMvp8/XbLzQDsd4dI/AAAAAAAAgRA/MCGishSqF_shZvN-sm1W3MO5QyWeSKp7wCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/pumpkin2.png" /></a></div>

<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>But with Halloween comes the age old question, what am i going to wear? It’s the one time out of the year where you can go all out, whether you’re serving looks or serving spooks, Halloween is Christmas for Jack Skellington and some creative fans! But as someone who wears glasses and doesn’t enjoy wearing contacts, it can be hard to find the right costume where my glasses actually makes sense with the character!<br />
<br />
Every year finding the perfect costume is a real struggle it’s always the same dilemma and every year I hear the same rambling of ideas “I want to wear something sexy, but like also something scary that shows off my curves but also covers me up and just something that breathes but is also really heavy but it HAS to be creative but also really simple…” Someone who ends up going as a sexy cat.<br />
<br />
But Halloween shouldn’t be about looking sexy, I mean wow you’re going as a sexy nurse? No, a medical professional would know to put clothes on in this weather.<br />
<br />
See? It’s just not realistic. But if spooky isn’t your thing, I’ve got you covered.<br />
<br />
Instead the best looks are when you fully committed to the look, be the Meryl Streep of Halloween, as long as the final look is BEWITCHING!<br />

The team at Finance Foodie was on site to cover this event and we had a great time dining on some delicious delicacies from local restaurants while supporting a great cause. Here were some of the highlights of the night.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><span style="color: #351c75; font-size: x-large;">~*~*~*~</span></b></div>
<br />
By far, the favorite of the night was the Toasted Almond Mousse cake from <a href="https://www.lartusi.com/">L'Artusi</a>'s chef Jessica Craig. The almond cake was moist and rich with a slight hint of almond flavor that wasn't overpowering. I also loved the caramelized apple crisp topping which gave the cake some crunch.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cPASIlXpZis/XYuN8JQyGZI/AAAAAAAAgIw/bidXKBQZg-4ddqbmA3gF3Ol8FK7UitWYwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_0033.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1153" data-original-width="1470" height="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cPASIlXpZis/XYuN8JQyGZI/AAAAAAAAgIw/bidXKBQZg-4ddqbmA3gF3Ol8FK7UitWYwCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/IMG_0033.JPG" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #351c75;">Almond Cake</span></b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Coming in strong as well was <a href="https://abigailkirsch.com/">AK Catering</a>'s S'Mores Short Rib in a Jar. Abigail Kirsch's catering company offered a nice juxtaposition of sweet and savory in one cup - sweet potato mash and toasted marshmallow on top and a hearty warm short rib on the bottom.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--1ESom06RZQ/XYuggL2a-II/AAAAAAAAgI8/tXDclNnc2nEWOmBR54zaInXXuCwA1cWygCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG_7263.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="937" data-original-width="1249" height="480" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--1ESom06RZQ/XYuggL2a-II/AAAAAAAAgI8/tXDclNnc2nEWOmBR54zaInXXuCwA1cWygCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/IMG_7263.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #351c75;">S'Mores in a Jar</span></b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Another sweet treat came from <a href="https://wmgreenbergdesserts.com/">William Greenberg Desserts</a>. Pastry Chef Carol Becker's simple and effective black and white (along with the on-theme pink and white) cookies were a hit. Basic and reliable - nothing wrong with that!<br />

<a href="https://www.littletong.com/">Little Tong</a>'s Otoro Crisp was a real treat from the sea. Who knew an eclectic combination of fatty tuna, onion crisps and seaweed mayo on a shrimp cracker would be so delightful?<br />

Speaking of seafood, <a href="https://sensakana.com/">Sen Sakana</a>'s offering was winner not only for its taste profile, but for its excellent presentation (for sure the most "complete" plate of the night). Mina Newman's torched salmon ceviche with shisho leaf, aji limo chili and yuzu marinade had a lovely citrus undertone and was almost too beautiful to eat - but of course I did and it was darn good too!<br />

I've never met a guacamole + chips I didn't like and <a href="http://eltoroblanconyc.com/">El Toro Blanco</a>'s offering did not disappoint. <br />
Growing up, <a href="http://www.bostonmarket.com/">Boston Market</a> was known as my spot for some juicy and tender rotisserie chicken (plus all the fabulous fixings on the side, especially that to-die-for cornbread). But now I hear they have expanded their offerings to the other white meat - beef!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<a name='more'></a>Available for a limited time, Boston Market is offering its new Rotisserie Brisket at participating locations while supplies last. On Monday and Tuesday evenings starting at 5 p.m., guests can relish in the delicious flavors of their tender brisket, which has been slow-cooked in their famous rotisseries. Each Rotisserie Brisket Individual Meal is served with a side of smoky hickory BBQ sauce, choice of two regular sides and fresh-baked cornbread starting at $13.99.<br />

Guests can now enjoy USDA Choice Prime Rib individual meals after 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings and after 12 p.m. on Sunday at participating locations.<br />

<br />
In the wake of CES in Las Vegas comes the CES of culinary delight—the <a href="https://www.specialtyfood.com/shows-events/winter-fancy-food-show/">Specialty Food Association's 2019 Winter Fancy Food Show</a>! Companies big and small, from multinational health food companies, to mom-and-pop popcorn makers, to Brazilian Cheese Bread makers trying to make in the USA gather to showcase their unique take on taste.

Here’s some of the more innovative products we saw:<br />
<br />

<h4>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #351c75;">Clio Bars</span></b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Have you ever wanted to eat a healthy ice cream bar? The ladies behind the <a href="https://cliosnacks.com/">Clio Greek Yogurt Bar</a> saw a way to provide a kick of protein, flavor, and nutrients in one small chocolate-covered bar. The texture is just like an ice cream bar, but it doesn’t need to be frozen! The slight sourness of the yogurt goes great with the subtle hint of sweetness. With a gamut of flavors like Hazelnut, Strawberry, Blueberry, Espresso, and more, there’s a taste for every palate. Seriously one of the best things I tried at the Winter Fancy Food Show!<br />
<br />
<h4>
<span style="color: #351c75; font-size: large;"><b>Zero-Calorie Beer</b></span></h4>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #351c75;">All-Free (photo courtesy: Suntory)</span></b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Have you ever wanted to drink beer that tastes exactly like beer, provides the fizzy refreshing feeling, and was completely calorie-free? Well that exists now, except it doesn’t contain alcohol (can’t win them all). <a href="https://all-free.suntory.com/">All-Free from Suntory</a>, one of Japan’s top beer manufacturers, is bound to either make you love it or hate it. I personally loved it—the light wheaty taste reminded me of a light pale ale, with none of the guilt. The drink derives it’s flavor from wheat and hops same as traditional beer, except there’s no fermentation process, and no alcohol. I would definitely buy this to drink casually.<br />

<b><span style="color: #351c75; font-size: large;">Vegan Cheese Just Gets Better and Better</span></b></h4>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #351c75;">kotatsu vegan cheese</span></b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
As people trend towards more eco-conscious behaviors, the biggest impact one can make is changing their diet. But I’ll be honest, that is hard. For me, cheese is a big deal and something I’m sad to cut down on. However, with the power of culinary technology from companies like <a href="https://miyokos.com/">Miyoko’s Creamery</a> and <a href="http://punkrawklabs.net/nut-milk-cheeses.html">kotatsu</a>, the taste difference between animal cheese and nut milk cheese is indistinguishable. Gone are the days of suffering through slices of daiya pizza. Now there’s gourmet vegan cheeses in all different flavors and textures. It’s easy to make a change when the change tastes so damn good. Some of the best vegan cheese I’ve ever had at the Winter Fancy Food Show!<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #351c75;">Good Catch Fish-Free Tuna</span></b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I picked up a sample of <a href="http://goodcatchfoods.com/">Good Catch Fish-Free Tuna</a> without realizing it was completely vegan and had a bite. It was literally some of the best tuna salad I’ve ever had. I asked the persona manning the booth what kind of tuna it was, and he responded, “legumes!” Cue my very pleasant surprise. The “tuna” itself has the perfect flaky canned tuna texture, and breaks apart in your mouth is what I think is a more satisfying and firm way than actual canned tuna. This is a fantastic product and I hope more people get the chance to try it.<br />

<br />
To celebrate the holiday season, <a href="https://www.casabarilla.com/">Casa Barilla</a>, unveiled a special “Feast of the Seven Fishes” menu at its restaurants in New York and California.
The two dishes on the menu pay homage to the Southern Italian custom of La Vigilia (the Vigil) and the Italian-American tradition of the “Feast of the Seven Fishes” in which in observance of an abstinence of meat on Christmas Eve, guests feast on an abundance of seafood in the form of a “grand-meal.” I had a chance to sample the menu recently at Casa Barilla's Radio City NYC location and it was a real treat!<br />

</tbody></table>
<br />
<a name='more'></a>I started my“Feast of the Seven Fishes” with the first item on the menu - a Chilled Crab and Scallop Tri-Color Salad ($13.95) - which features crabs, scallops, shrimp and calamari, mixed with cannelloni beans, served on top baby greens and drizzled with a citrus and white balsamic vinaigrette. While this could be an entree itself, with its generous helping of tender seafood and beans, this appetizer was a refreshing, light and tangy start to what was to come.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #351c75;">Chilled Crab and Scallop Tri-Colored Salad</span></b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
My main course (or second entree) was the second item on the menu, the Linguine with Clams and Mussels ($14.50) - an updated version of the classic linguine “vongole,” consisting of fresh clams and mussels, a sprinkling of Calabrian chilies, and topped with umami and anchovy flavored breadcrumbs. The chillies gave the dish a nice spicy touch, the breadcrumbs provided a nice crunch and the sauce was just perfect (flavorful but not overwhelming).<br />

</tbody></table>
Casa Barilla’s “Feast of the Seven Fishes,” will only be available until December 31st.
And because Barilla embraces its responsibility to help others less fortunate, for every “Feast of the Seven Fishes” dish sold, a corresponding serving of pasta will be donated to local charities (LA Mission on the West Coast, and Food Bank NYC in New York). So spread the holiday cheer, have some delicious seafood and visit Casa Barilla for a great meal!<br />

<br />
<a href="http://www.luckychengs.com/">Lucky Cheng's</a>, NYC's original and longest running drag queen cabaret, recently celebrated its 25 year anniversary with a spectacular dinner show hosted by Drag Queen OG Paulina the Princess of Power. Yours truly had a chance to attend this spirited performance while noshing on a three course meal - and all I can say is - WoW what an interesting and fun-filled night!<br />

<a name='more'></a>When the Mister and I arrived (yes - the Mister did attend, with trepidation, as we were forewarned that the Drag Queens loved to roast on the gentlemen in attendance), we were greeted by a lovely Queen who escorted us to our seats at one of the four large communal tables. The crowd was mostly filled with bachelorettes and birthday parties - most who were already tipsy upon arrival - so the party already started before the first course (an alcoholic drink obviously).<br />

Speaking of drink, the Mister decided we should catch up to the rest of our table, whom were neck deep in their large "Orgy Bowl" ($42). He ordered the aptly named Pattaya's Poontang cocktail ($12), mixture of rum and vodka, with a splash of pineapple and cranberry juice. Yes it was very strong and yes I can say were were both good to go after that one drink.<br />

The only menu at Lucky Cheng's is prix fixe for $55, which will get your three courses. We started with the Crispy Cheese Taquitos, which were bite sized and quite flavorful.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #351c75;">Slow Roasted Oven Pork</span></b></td></tr>

For our main, we got the Slow Roasted Oven Pork served with chicharrones and caramelized onions. Not Michelin star worthy (do you come to a drag show for fine dining though?), but still very tender and well executed.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #351c75;">Strawberry Tres Leches Cake</span></b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The standout of all the courses was dessert. We had a delicious slice of Strawberry Tres Leches Cake, a new creation that Chef Saul Montiel, the Executive Chef of Stage 48 and Cantina Rooftop, concocted for us to try. The cake was ultra light and spongy, which contrasted nicely with the heavier sweet milk. All around goodness.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #351c75;">Queen Paulina chatting up the crowd</span></b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Now for the performance - I had never been to a drag show before so I had no idea what to expect. I had been forewarned that the show was interactive with the audience (check), could get raunchy (double check), and would be extremely funny (triple check). Yes it got a bit uncomfortable at times, but it was all in good fun and most importantly, laugh out loud funny! Seriously, I was glad the food was served first because I probably would have choked on my taquitos and pork during some of the acts.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WRNLek23NiY/W_LhGe11dZI/AAAAAAAAcm0/eQg3e_-BjdA16PdBeS__g4_2JiHOyV6TACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_5593.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="620" data-original-width="669" height="592" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WRNLek23NiY/W_LhGe11dZI/AAAAAAAAcm0/eQg3e_-BjdA16PdBeS__g4_2JiHOyV6TACLcBGAs/s640/IMG_5593.JPG" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #351c75;">Queen Paulina roasting a Mister (not mine)!</span></b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
For my first drag show, Lucky Cheng's went way beyond my expectations - even the Mister enjoyed it immensely (probably because he hid in the shadows and avoided any roasting). And for $55 per head for a tasty dinner and a Broadway-like show - now that's also a great deal (especially in Manhattan). So come for the food, stay for the show and have a great time at Lucky Cheng's!<br />

<br />
The <a href="http://gfafexpo.com/">Gluten Free and Allergen Friendly Expos (GFAF)</a> are the largest and fastest growing special diet consumer events in the US. Started in 2007, the events are professionally managed and have expanded from one to eight cities throughout the United States. In addition to meeting the needs of the Celiac community, the Expo welcomes those with gluten sensitivities, auto-immune/inflammatory diseases and autism.<br />

Lucky for North Cali residence, the GFAF is coming to town in less than 2 weeks! As someone who embraces a mostly gluten-free diet, I went last year and it was amazing - so much to see, so much to eat and so much to learn.<br />

<br />
The other night, I headed down to the <a href="http://www.barillarestaurants.com/">Barilla restaurant </a>in Rockefeller Center to check out their latest menu offering. Partnering with the viral vegan cooking site <a href="https://www.thugkitchen.com/">Thug Kitchen</a>, Barilla recently debuted a new limited-time menu item featuring Barilla’s Red Lentil Penne and Sundried Tomato Pesto and toasted almonds. Packed with protein and vegetarian friendly, I was excited to see what was in store.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oCBHZzu1Mno/W79mrDRM2uI/AAAAAAAAbhs/cM_emLz_128oIVemjw_Ax7uYUzFhStZqQCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_4981.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1095" data-original-width="1600" height="438" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oCBHZzu1Mno/W79mrDRM2uI/AAAAAAAAbhs/cM_emLz_128oIVemjw_Ax7uYUzFhStZqQCLcBGAs/s640/IMG_4981.JPG" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #351c75;">Red Lentil Penne</span></b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<a name='more'></a>Because the pasta is only made with one ingredient (red lentil flour), the texture is a bit different from a "regular pasta" - the Red Lentil Penne has a denser taste and mild nutty flavor. With the high protein content (each 2oz serving has a whopping 13 grams), it also fills your up and keeps you satisfied for much longer than your typical white flour pasta. Combined with the sundried tomato pesto sauce and the added nuttiness from the sprinkling of almonds, this dish is a real taste bud winner!<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #351c75;">Good meal at a good price!</span></b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The Red Lentil Penne Pasta will be available at the Barilla Rockefeller Center location in New York City from Sept. 25 – Oct. 31.
Also, for every dish sold, Barilla will donate one serving of dry pasta to the Food Bank For New York City. Thug Kitchen’s Cookbook will also be sold at the Barilla locations during the promotion, and 100% of the profit from the sales of the book will be donated as well. So here's to a pasta dish that you can feel good about eating - both from your waist-line to your wallet!<br />

<br />
One of my favorite events every year is the <a href="https://www.specialtyfood.com/shows-events/summer-fancy-food-show/">Specialty Food Association's Summer Fancy Food Show</a>. Held in the massive Javits Center, this three day spectacle is every food lover's dream - aisles upon aisles of gourmet food products just waiting to be imbibed and indulged!<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #351c75;">Entrance</span></b></td></tr>

There was a lot to see and eat, but I narrowed down my Top 10 for 2018 below.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<b>10. <a href="https://www.pocasinternational.com/single-post/2018/03/30/All-About-Dragon-Fruits">Pocasville Dragon Fruit Chips</a> </b>- I love fresh dragon fruit so I am so excited to see this in an easy to eat and convenient chip form.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QpLjLkQm92w/Wz54b_7IAtI/AAAAAAAAaic/J2YxHPKhs_kk7mVZ-p03hPg9DPbjuaCLgCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_3684.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QpLjLkQm92w/Wz54b_7IAtI/AAAAAAAAaic/J2YxHPKhs_kk7mVZ-p03hPg9DPbjuaCLgCLcBGAs/s640/IMG_3684.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>9. <a href="https://latourangelle.com/">La Touramgelle</a> Artisan Oils</b> - Fancy oils that are all natural and organic - great for dressing a salad or for cooking. The pesto oil is my favorite.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<b>8. <a href="https://mikesmightygood.com/">Mike's Might Good</a> Craft Ramen</b> - This ain't the 10 cent packets of ramen you eat as a poor starving college student (or NYC dweller when rent is about to be due). Mike's Mighty Good makes gourmet ramen with the same rich broth and noodles you get at those fancy ramen restos around the city. Just add some egg, meat and veggies.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<b>7. <a href="https://cool.haus/">Coolhaus</a> Ice Cream Pints</b> - This hip ice cream shop that is known for its funky flavors (Milkshake and Fries anyone?) now sells its wares in pint form. Ice Cream Addicts unite!<br />

<br />
<b>6. <a href="http://www.halenbrands.com/ftgu.html">From the Ground Up</a> Cauliflower Crackers</b> - Cauliflower is officially the new hot food item of the year due to its health benefits as a vegetable and its place in lower carb diets (at the show, it was in everything from pizza dough to ready to eat meals as a rice substitute). These crackers tasted just like a good old fashion Cheez-it (with half the fat).<br />

<br />
I recently attended the <a href="https://www.internationalchocolatefest.com/">2018 International Chocolate Festival</a> at the San Mateo Convention Center this past April. I won’t lie—my favorite part about food festivals is the free samples! There were over 40 vendors all throwing out their wares for the visiting chocoholic. The Chocolatiers are all very happy to talk to you about their work. Where they source the beans, how they make the bars, what kind of flavor profiles to expect; you can feel their passion as they walk you through the different kinds of chocolate available. <br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VElvh-0sY-4/Wwa717aYeZI/AAAAAAAAZa8/ouYpFao2Lv811EB3RKHZGjHYNCiipbnSwCLcBGAs/s1600/pic.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="938" data-original-width="1407" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VElvh-0sY-4/Wwa717aYeZI/AAAAAAAAZa8/ouYpFao2Lv811EB3RKHZGjHYNCiipbnSwCLcBGAs/s640/pic.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #351c75;">Small Batch Chocolate</span></b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<a name='more'></a>Artisan single-origin chocolate isn’t cheap unfortunately. You definitely pay for quality, and it’s worth it. But! At the festival, many vendors were selling their bars at a discount. Moreover, you’re able to find all sorts of wonderful different chocolates from all over the world in just one place.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

Free chocolate isn’t the only thing at the International Chocolate Festival (although that’s all that should matter!). There was also a suite of interesting cooking demos that were free for attendees.<br />

<br />
A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to revisit the Meatpacking hotspot Bagatelle for dinner. It had been a few years since <a href="http://www.financefoodie.com/2015/11/ballin-like-baller-at-bagatelle.html">my previously impressive gluttonous feast</a> at this joint, so I was excited to taste some of the new menu items!<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #351c75;">Interior</span></b></td></tr>

<br />
<a name='more'></a>When I arrived, I noticed the place was decorated in a retro theme, complete with Pac Man motifs and a old projector showing movies from my childhood (yes I am that old). Tables were decorated with old vinyl records placemats and rainbow confetti which brought the party atmosphere - I knew it was going be a good time!<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #351c75;">Tartare de Boeuf</span></b></td></tr>

For our entrees, we split a variety of dishes including the Filet de Flétan en Croute ($40), a bread crusted halibut served on top spaghetti squash with a touch of pumpkin purée; the Saumon d'Ecosse ($34), a grilled salmon accompanied by a medley of cauliflower, spinach, pine nuts, and grapes; and the Magret de Canard ($37), a honey glazed duck breast with brussels sprouts, blood orange, and macron almond.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #351c75;">Saumon d'Ecosse</span></b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Both the fishes dishes were excellently prepared and full of flavor, but my favorite by far was the Magret de Canard. The duck breasts were juicy and so well executed that it gave my mouth a feeling of "joie de vivre"! The blood orange was also a well paired lighter and citrusy contrast to the heavier duck and the almonds provided a welcomed nutty crunch.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-553Gv7TL63o/WvrDU9279XI/AAAAAAAAZR4/Xn5O3_7yvlAJ9j2rFdLF2eyPlX-8-rJWwCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_2931.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1556" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-553Gv7TL63o/WvrDU9279XI/AAAAAAAAZR4/Xn5O3_7yvlAJ9j2rFdLF2eyPlX-8-rJWwCLcBGAs/s640/IMG_2931.JPG" width="622" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #351c75;">Magret de Canard</span></b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Weekday dinners at Bagatelle tend to gravitate towards a more "classy hip" vibe versus "debaucherous hip" as during their legendary weekend boozy brunches, which is nice because it really allows for their well executed food items to shine. All and all, Bagatelle combines a fun time with fine dining and I can't wait for my next meal here!<br />

<br />
The other night, I visited the Barilla Restaurant in Herald Square to celebrate pre-Carbonara Day. Carbonara Day was established in Italy last April 6 as a way to hail a particularly delicious pasta that most believe was first made in mid-20th Century Rome as a hearty meal for Italian charcoal workers. Barilla Restaurants will bring Carbonara <strike>Day</strike> Month to the States by adding Chef Alfonso Sanna’s signature Pasta alla Carbonara on April 6 to its menus and keeping it until May 6. However, yours truly got got a special sneak peak at this tantalizing menu item along with a special cooking demo by Chef Sanna himself!<br />

While he cooked, Alfonso explained to us that every chef has a different recipe for Pasta alla Carbonara, but his signature dish is made with Barilla thick spaghetti, crispy bacon, egg yolks, Parmigiano and Pecorino cheese, cream, and black pepper. He also gave us useful Carbonara cooking tips - such as making sure the heat is on low (any hotter and the egg yolks just might turn into an omelet) and to plate the pasta first, then drizzle the bacon and sauce on top for extra flavor.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
All the fragrant scents from Chef Sanna's kitchen made me hungry, so I was super excited to <a href="http://restaurant.eatapp.co/">eat</a> the final product. Oh wow was it tasty! The pasta was perfectly al dente and the sauce was creamy and rich. The bacon was nicely crispy and the dash of black pepper really brought all the flavors together seamlessly. I've had many a Carbonara dishes from many a different restaurants but this by far was one of the best.<br />

During the President's Day long weekend, the Mister and I journeyed to the south end of Manhattan to visit the Seaport District (aka/fka South Street Seaport). As both of us hadn't visited the area since pre-Hurricane Sandy, we were excited to see the new restaurants, stores and buildings that have redeveloped the area from yesteryear.<br />

<br />
<a name='more'></a>However, we should have checked the weather report before we headed out because it started snowing heavily as soon as we got out of the Fulton Street stop (luckily, as seasoned city dwellers, we always carry umbrellas). We quickly ducked for cover at <a href="http://acquarestaurantnyc.com/">Acqua Restaurant NYC</a>, a lovely little Southern Italian restaurant on Peck Street, for some shelter (and carbs!). The restaurant itself is rustic and cozy, with its exposed brick walls, vintage wood tables and warm candlelight. It was surprisingly busy for a blustery night, but we were seated right away and brought a basket of warm homemade bread and olive oil that really hit the spot.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Linguine alle Vongole</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
We were informed by our server that Acqua is known for their fresh, never frozen, seafood, so we had to order the classic Linguine alle Vongole ($23) for one of our pasta mains. The clams did not disappoint - they were were large, fresh and generous in portion. However, the real standout was the olive oil and parsley sauce. While a simple concoction, it was for sure one of the best sauces I've ever had on this dish (and I've had many a Linguine alle Vongole over the years!).<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #351c75;">Pappardelle Tartufo</span></b></td></tr>

Our second pasta dish we shared was another Italian classic, the Pappardelle Tartufo ($21). The whole wheat <a href="https://www.kitchenistic.com/best-pasta-maker/">handmade pasta</a> in this dish was fantasic and perfectly cooked (by the way, handmade pastas make all the difference in the world - I simply cannot go back to box pasta anymore). I also loved the rich demi-glaze sauce, the light hint of truffle oil and the plump mushrooms that completed the entree.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #351c75;">Gelato</span></b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
We were both in a carb coma, but after we saw the dessert menu on an interactive iPad, we knew that a serving of the hazelnut and vanilla gelato ($10) was the right way to close out the night. The gelato was decadent and it was fun to "scoop" up the gelato using the biscotti sticks that adorned the dessert. Acqua is a charming and wonderful resto that serves delicious food by a very friendly staff. I only wish I lived closer to the Seaport area - I would probably be here every night!<br />

<br />
It’s fitting that the <a href="https://www.specialtyfood.com/">Specialty Food Association</a>'s 2018 Winter Fancy Food Show was held in San Francisco. A town known for it’s diverse new technology—why not diverse new foods? Here’s some of the more interesting trends and items seen at the 2018 Fancy Food Show.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7fPBR8MAm9Y/Wnh-7TD-P8I/AAAAAAAAXqU/No11z-ZklM0CE5kld3Diak-2nKjZczHwQCLcBGAs/s1600/floor3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="675" data-original-width="1200" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7fPBR8MAm9Y/Wnh-7TD-P8I/AAAAAAAAXqU/No11z-ZklM0CE5kld3Diak-2nKjZczHwQCLcBGAs/s640/floor3.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>

<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
<b><span style="color: #351c75; font-size: x-large;">Vegan Jerky </span></b><br />
This year, there were several non-meat jerky alternatives shown. As a recent vegetarian myself, I was oh-so-happy to taste the wonderfully sweet-salty-smoky flavor or jerky that I had missed. I tried a soy-based jerky from <a href="http://www.unisoy.com.sg/">Unisoy</a>, and a mushroom-based jerky from <a href="https://www.mushroomjerky.com/">Pan's Mushroom Jerky</a>.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CTaUTWO2zVU/Wnh9YvI92CI/AAAAAAAAXps/zHvUSw21l7YfCnlvNUIE7u9ScN28QjKpgCLcBGAs/s1600/jerkey.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="732" data-original-width="634" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CTaUTWO2zVU/Wnh9YvI92CI/AAAAAAAAXps/zHvUSw21l7YfCnlvNUIE7u9ScN28QjKpgCLcBGAs/s640/jerkey.png" width="554" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #351c75;">Vegan Jerky</span></b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Both had textures that were far better than traditional meat jerky—the texture was very uniform from piece to piece and just chewy enough. No break-off-your-fillings jerky here (not that I'm speaking from experience or anything... ahem...). If you're expecting it to taste exactly like a slab of cow, you'll be disappointed. Personally, I actually preferred the more subdued umami from the mushrooms and the distinctive smokiness of jerky. It's a winner, folks!<br />
<br />
<b><span style="color: #351c75; font-size: x-large;">Protein Now Tastes Good </span></b><br />
Gone are the days of choking down hard, gummy protein bars. Now is the heydey of delicious protein snacks that focus on being casual-consumer friendly and most importantly: tasty.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GDqccxYjD9U/Wnh92cFIA8I/AAAAAAAAXpw/x1rLdovvG6ojME3nXbgkvxD7MzSvnYB2wCLcBGAs/s1600/siren.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="690" data-original-width="1280" height="344" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GDqccxYjD9U/Wnh92cFIA8I/AAAAAAAAXpw/x1rLdovvG6ojME3nXbgkvxD7MzSvnYB2wCLcBGAs/s640/siren.png" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #351c75;">Protein Bites</span></b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I particularly enjoyed the Protein Bites from <a href="https://www.sirensnacks.com/">Siren</a>, and Protein Balls from the aptly-named <a href="http://theproteinballco.com/">The Protein Ball Co.</a> The latter being one of the most delicious protein treats I've eaten. With a focus on interesting new flavor combinations like Cacao+Orange, I look forward to seeing them on more shelves soon.<br />

</tbody></table>
<b style="color: #351c75; font-size: x-large;">Savory Drinks</b><br />
Most surprising to me this year was the proliferation of savory soups marketed as drinks. Some were bone broth based, whereas other vendors, like <a href="http://bonafideprovisions.com/drinkableveggies/">Bonafide Provisions</a>, touted their healthy vitamin-packed Drinkable Veggies line of savory drinks. It was definitely jarring to drink something out of a smoothie bottle and have it just be tomato soup, but they were delicious nonetheless. <br />

</tbody></table>
<b style="color: #351c75; font-size: x-large;">Sour Tropical Fruits</b><br />
One of the more interesting players <a href="https://www.shanleyfarms.com/collections/citriburst-finger-limes">Citriburst</a>'s Finger Lime Pearls. A special variety of skinny lime which tastes less acidic than it's rounder parents, the Finger Lime can be used to add accents to dishes, spice up a dessert, or just be eaten as-is.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Agqn5NNaGQU/Wnh-sO3HwJI/AAAAAAAAXqM/7KplNjha33IEj7gVt_o3rxpdosbIKNZiwCLcBGAs/s1600/fruits.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="871" data-original-width="1212" height="458" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Agqn5NNaGQU/Wnh-sO3HwJI/AAAAAAAAXqM/7KplNjha33IEj7gVt_o3rxpdosbIKNZiwCLcBGAs/s640/fruits.png" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #351c75;">Sour Tropical Fruits</span></b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Another interesting contender was the Tamalitoz tamarind-based candies from <a href="http://www.tamalitoz.com/">Sugarox</a>. Another sour tropical fruit, the tamarind has been used in well-loved candies in more tropical climates. However, it's nice to see it getting a delicious and aesthetically pleasing update for Western markets.<br />

<br />
On most weekends, the Mister and I head to south to Chinatown for some satiating noodles and dumplings. However, we decided to mix it up this weekend and veer West to neighboring Little Italy to check out <a href="http://www.margheritanyc.com/">Margherita NYC</a>, a Southern Italian shop known for their brick oven pizzas and rich pastas.<br />

<br />
<a name='more'></a>The resto gave me a warm rustic feel as soon as I walked in, with yellow hued lamps on the wall, cherry wood tables, exposed brick and a gigantic old school brick oven in the back where you can watch your pizzas being made.<br />

Seeing fiery brick oven, we knew we had to try the pizzas - I had the namesake Margherita ($15) with added aged Prosciutto ($3) and the Mister had the Prosciutto e Fungi ($17).<br />

When I first walked in, I was a bit nervous this resto would be yet another "tourist trap" eatery that pervade Little Italy. After one bite of my Margherita (+ Prosciutto) pizza, I felt bad for even thinking that because the pizza was so good! The crust had a nice chewy consistency with a light signature smoky brick oven taste, the San Marzano tomato sauce was vibrant with a touch of sweetness, and the fragrant Prosciutto was generously layered on top. The Mister's Prosciutto e Fungi (basically the Margherita with mushrooms and <span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: #2e2e2e; font-family: "droid" serif;">parmacotto ham) was also very tasty - the mushrooms really brought out the flavor of the sauce and the mozzarella. </span></span><br />

<br />
It's no secret that the Mister and I are fans of <a href="http://www.financefoodie.com/search/label/Italian">Italian cuisine</a> and are always in the hunt for our next great pasta meal. Therefore, when we heard about <a href="http://osteria57.com/">Osteria 57</a>, a brand new Pescatarian Italian resto in the heart of Greenwich Village, we had to check it out.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-X6kNm_YfoGU/Whwddpmh9QI/AAAAAAAAWyo/-IknEoy5i_UBdCXtglVu2W8q3SYqdRgaQCLcBGAs/s1600/FullSizeRender%2B%252861%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-X6kNm_YfoGU/Whwddpmh9QI/AAAAAAAAWyo/-IknEoy5i_UBdCXtglVu2W8q3SYqdRgaQCLcBGAs/s640/FullSizeRender%2B%252861%2529.jpg" width="480" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #351c75;">Exterior</span></b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<a name='more'></a>Osteria 57 was tad difficult to find and easy to miss (especially in the dark), as it was hidden under some scafolding off the main 6th Avenue path. The interior - while small - is cozy and classy, with candle lit tables perfect for date night or a get together with close friends. We were warmly welcomed in by the staff, seated promptly and offered a drink from their extensive wine list (FYI: 50% off on Sunday nights).<br />

Before our appetizers arrived, we were presented with table bread and olive oil. The bread was basic, but I loved how the olives were infused in the olive oil - not only did it make for a great presentation, but the flavor was obviously much richer and bolder than your run of the mill Bertolli bottle from the bodega.<br />

For the appetizer, we had the Polpo Arrosto ($20), a grilled octopus served with a potato puree and roasted grapes. What a show stopper! - the octopus tentacles were very fresh and nicely tender and the roasted grapes added a nice sweet tang to each bite. A lovely dish indeed and hard to top...<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #351c75;">Gnocchi di Mele e Scampi</span></b></td></tr>

...however, the main dishes blew me away! The Mister and I shared the Orecchiette con Cime di Rapa e Gamberi ($24) and the Gnocchi di Mele e Scampi ($25) - both out of this world good. The orecchiette and gnocchi pastas were both cooked perfectly al dente. The shimp in the orecchiette and the langostine bites in the gnocchi both were extremely high quality and tasted like they just were swimming in the ocean this morning. Another highlight was the Parmesan cream sauce served on the side of each dish - both entrees already had an abundance of flavor, but a small drizzle of the parm sauce added a lot of depth to the dishes and was just the right finishing touch.<br />

During our dinner, the dining room remained surprisingly full (given that it was a holiday weekend), packed with what appeared to be regulars who had already discovered Osteria 57's authentic (and reasonably priced) Italian fare. So the next time you want to escape the hussle and bussle of New York City life, be sure to head to Ostera 57 for a quiet slice of Italy!<br />

<br />
This past weekend, the Mister and I were in the Union Square area of Manhattan when the hankering for some pasta and pizza hit. As luck would have it, we happened to walk by <a href="http://www.mandolinonyc.com/">Mandolino Ristorante & Pizzeria</a>, a fairly new Italian addition to the neighborhood - we heard good things already about this place through the grapevine, so we decided to stop on in.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-N22FzeHDUnE/WeTHvYUUiFI/AAAAAAAAVv4/4JaqdE6gbw8KSQot2ZEa2W0N2qdllpFKQCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_0563.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1283" data-original-width="1146" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-N22FzeHDUnE/WeTHvYUUiFI/AAAAAAAAVv4/4JaqdE6gbw8KSQot2ZEa2W0N2qdllpFKQCLcBGAs/s640/IMG_0563.JPG" width="570" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #351c75;"><b>Exterior</b></span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<a name='more'></a>The interior of Mandolino can be described as "chill hipster cool" with artwork by local up and coming artists adorning its walls (this is near the East Village after all). As we were their for brunch, the crowd was pretty subdued (mostly local NYU students on a study break), but I can imagine it getting real creative during the evenings, especially as the spot is right across the street from the Classic Stage Company theater.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #351c75;">Interior</span></b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
For our appetizer, the Mister and I shared the Porcina pizza ($18), a brick oven pizza topped with porcini mushrooms, prosciutto, mozzerella, truffle oil and shaved parm - basically all my favorites! Everything was so fresh tasting on this pizza, but the real highlight was the dough. I was later told by the owner that the dough (along with the yeast to rise the dough) is all made in house, which explains the nice chewy consistency that is reminiscent of my holidays noshing in the lovely cafes in Napoli.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #351c75;">Porcina Pizza</span></b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
For our entrees, the Mister got the Linguine Alle Vongole ($19.95), the standard Italian menu staple of pasta and clams, and I got the Frittata Spagetti ($15.95), the not-so standard plate of spaghetti, pancetta and sauce tucked inside a frittata, served with a side of salad (gotta be at least somewhat healthy!). Mandolino's Linguine Alle Vongole was super solid and well made - the clams were fresh and generous, the garlic butter sauce was tasty and the pasta was cooked perfectly. The frittata was also very flavorful and perfect for brunch -and a good excuse to eat noodles before noon!<br />

We were so full that we had to pass on dessert (the Nutella Pizza did sounded awfully tempting) but I take comfort in knowing we will return again to try more of the menu. Mandolino serves authentic high quality Italian food in a cozy atmosphere that is great for any meal period!<br />

<br />
One magical time a year, the <a href="https://www.specialtyfood.com/">Specialty Food Association</a>'s Summer Fancy Food Show descends upon NYC, bringing lots of good eats and treats. For three days straight, attendees eat and drink and be merry with over 1,000 purveyors peddling their sweet, savory, sour and spicy delicacies.<br />

I always look forward to this blessed event - not only does my stomach thank me, but it's also a great way to see the newest products and coolest trends in food and drink coming to market. Below are a few highlights from this year's show.<br />

It's summer in the city, and when the back of your neck gets dirty and gritty, it's time for ice cream. America's favorite hot weather treat came from all regions, flavors and formats at the show. Some my favorites included Magnolia "Best of the Philippines" ice cream (with local Filipino flavors such as ube and sweet corn), San Francisco favorite <a href="http://www.humphryslocombe.com/">Humphry Slocombe</a> (their <a href="https://bluebottlecoffee.com/">Blue Bottle</a> brand coffee flavor is to die for!) and <a href="http://www.mymomochi.com/">my/mo mochi</a>'s fabulous mochi bar.<br />
