A Pescatarian Italian Gem at Osteria 57

By: Finance Foodie

It's no secret that the Mister and I are fans of Italian cuisine and are always in the hunt for our next great pasta meal.  Therefore, when we heard about Osteria 57, a brand new Pescatarian Italian resto in the heart of Greenwich Village, we had to check it out.
Exterior

Osteria 57 was tad difficult to find and easy to miss (especially in the dark), as it was hidden under some scafolding off the main 6th Avenue path. The interior - while small - is cozy and classy, with candle lit tables perfect for date night or a get together with close friends. We were warmly welcomed in by the staff, seated promptly and offered a drink from their extensive wine list (FYI: 50% off on Sunday nights).
Olive Oil
Before our appetizers arrived, we were presented with table bread and olive oil. The bread was basic, but I loved how the olives were infused in the olive oil - not only did it make for a great presentation, but the flavor was obviously much richer and bolder than your run of the mill Bertolli bottle from the bodega.
Polpo Arrosto
For the appetizer, we had the Polpo Arrosto ($20), a grilled octopus served with a potato puree and roasted grapes.  What a show stopper! - the octopus tentacles were very fresh and nicely tender and the roasted grapes added a nice sweet tang to each bite. A lovely dish indeed and hard to top...
Gnocchi di Mele e Scampi
...however, the main dishes blew me away! The Mister and I shared the Orecchiette con Cime di Rapa e Gamberi ($24) and the Gnocchi di Mele e Scampi ($25) - both out of this world good. The orecchiette and gnocchi pastas were both cooked perfectly al dente. The shimp in the orecchiette and the langostine bites in the gnocchi both were extremely high quality and tasted like they just were swimming in the ocean this morning. Another highlight was the Parmesan cream sauce served on the side of each dish - both entrees already had an abundance of flavor, but a small drizzle of the parm sauce added a lot of depth to the dishes and was just the right finishing touch.

During our dinner, the dining room remained surprisingly full (given that it was a holiday weekend), packed with what appeared to be regulars who had already discovered Osteria 57's authentic (and reasonably priced) Italian fare. So the next time you want to escape the hussle and bussle of New York City life, be sure to head to Ostera 57 for a quiet slice of Italy!
