We All Scream For Sugartooth Tours Ice Cream Summer Sundays Frozen Treats Tour

By: Finance Foodie

Summer in the City, back of my neck getting dirty and gritty…what to do about that? Answer: Operation Cool Down! Last Sunday, the Mister and I decided we weren’t going to let the blazing hotness keep us locked in doors – no, we were going to beat Mr. Heat by fighting it with Ms. Sweet’s cool confectioneries on Sugartooth Tours’ Ice Cream Summer Sundays Frozen Treats Tour.
Our sweet tour guide Allyson

This six stop two mile long cool treats walking tour started in the Union Square area with a fruit pop at Chloe’s Soft Serve, a sweets shop known for their healthy frozen treats made only with real fruit, water, and a touch of organic cane sugar. I was skeptical that something that sounded so healthy would be good but YUM – the banana fruit pop was hearty, satisfying and tasted like I was eating a cooler version of a frozen banana.

We snacked on our fruit pops while walking to our next stop, Sundaes and Cones, a fantastic old-fashioned (and full fat) ice cream sundae shop that looked straight out of DisneyWorld’s Main Street. We tasted bites of some super exotic ice cream flavors like Wasabi, Sweet Corn and Avocado and took a cup of the oh-so-decadent cookies and cream milkshake to go.
Outside of Sundaes and Cones
Stop number three took us to Yogorino, the original tart frozen yogurt shop that was a favorite of mine when I was in Philly for school. Unlike some of their high-sugar watered-down froyo peers, Yogorino’s froyo is uber creamy and tastes similar to ice cream (with a tang). The real highlight however is the pistachio puree topping – made from only the best pistachios in Italy, this sauce is eons richer in flavor than the standard Hershey’s chocolate or caramel syrup found in most add your own topping frozen dessert places.

I was starting to feel a bit full but cleared out some room when I saw our next stop – Rice to Riches. Ok so technically not a frozen confection but hey, I’m not complaining – I've loved Rice to Riches’ awesomely flavored rice puddings, ice cream store-like set up and whimsical signs since I first moved to NYC. The New York Cheesecake flavored rice pudding our group sampled was creamy and was reminiscent of an actual cheesecake (with less fat/calories).

Our fifth stop had us traveling to the Little Italy district, home to pizza, pasta and of course gelato! M'O Gelato on Mulberry was bustling with activity when we stopped by and I can see why -- the super authentic and flavorful goodness of the product was oozing out upon each bite. I was tempted to get something exotic like Delirium (Amaretto Cookies and Chocolate Fondue), but decided on good ol' standby Pistachio as my final choice.
Sugartooth saved the best for last - the legendary Chinatown Ice Cream Factory! Haven been around for almost thee decades, this Chinatown landmark is home to my favorite ice cream flavor, Almond Cookie (also, the Mister has been going to Ctown Ice Cream Factory since he was a kid). Since this place is always packed, we got our mango and green tea flavored ice cream pre-packed and ready to go. While the mango and green tea were good, we had to head back in to end our tour the right way with a taste of the Almond Cookie.

Don’t let the "Ice Cream" in the tour title fool you - Sugartooth provides so much more than JUST ice cream! The tour showcases an excellent, eclectic and delicious blend of a variety of frozen and chilled dessert options around lower Manhattan  - some new, some old but something for everyone. And at only $50 a person, it’s a great way to explore the city, taste some fun treats and kill a summer afternoon in a sweet and cool way!
