Richer than Rich at Davio’s New York

By: Finance Foodie

When I lived in Philadelphia for grad school, one of my biggest regrets was not hitting up Davio’s (even though I lived two blocks away). I had heard great things about this Italian Steakhouse so when they invited me to a special media dinner to celebrate their newest location that opened just last November by Grand Central – I just had to check it out.

For my starter, I had the Grilled Baby Octopus served with Pancetta, Corona Beans, Frisée, and a Citron Vinaigrette. The lil’ baby octopi were almost too cute to eat but I was hungry – so off with their heads! They were tender and lacked the rubbery consistency usually found when not prepared correctly. The crispy yet slightly sweet Pancetta also added good flavor to the dish.

I was craving something hearty for dinner so I ordered the 10oz medium rare NY Strip Steak with white truffle butter, watercress, marbled potatoes and leeks. Wow – was this baby richer than rich. Not only was the steak itself soft like butter, the potato and watercress accompaniment was HELD together in a patty by white truffle butter. I felt a tad guilty as I devoured each savory bite – promising myself I would do better tomorrow when it came to sticking to my New Year’s Healthy Eating Plan.

Knowing I probably consumed about a week worth of calories from the dishes above, I might as well write this evening off like a mini vacation from my never-ending quest to lose those last five pounds. I rounded off the evening with an equally diet destroying dessert – a Devil’s Food Cake with candied pistachio and espresso tartuffo. Each bite of the cake enveloped my mouth with a hyper-sweet sinfulness that the Devil himself likely created. And the espresso tartuffo were a nice icing on the cake – the coldness of the gelato and the bitterness of the espresso flavoring contrasted so well with the warm moistness of the cake.

So with that, I rolled myself out into the cold night air and thought, “All’s well that ends in a good meal.”
