Classic Italian at AppetitO Ristorante New York

By: Finance Foodie

Nestled within Manhattan’s Theater District, AppetitO Ristorante offers a traditional array of Italian dishes and cocktails in an “at-home” atmosphere reminiscent of the Italian countryside. When I found out this under the radar Midtown mainstay just celebrated its 22nd anniversary last year, I had to check this place out to reward my stomach after a long week of work.
Calamari Fritti

When I walked in, I immediately felt comfortable - as the exposed brick walls in the main dining room and bar that was beautifully lit by a series of chandeliers gave off a casual yet intimate vibe. I started off with the classic Calamari Fritti ($14). The squid was fried perfectly and the red sauce that accompanied the platter was warm and flavorful. Simplicity done right.
Baked Mussels
I wasn't feeling super hungry so I decided to have the appetizer Baked Mussels, served in garlic butter sauce ($19), as a entree.  The mussels were plump and juicy - and the garlic butter sauce gave the dish a nice spice. Just an FYI, this was one of the many specials of the evening, so it's not on the regular menu.
Bomba
For dessert, I had another classic Italian favorite - the Bomba ($10). The two layers of vanilla and chocolate gelato separated by a layer of crushed almonds and coated with a layer of dark chocolate was a delicious way to end a great evening.

Although the place is pretty expensive, the food is solid. So if you find yourself in Midtown craving some classic Italian, AppetitO is a good bet.
