Light Up Your Life at Bell Book and Candle NYC

By : Finance Foodie

Last year, I had the good fortune of being introduced to the quaint West Village gem Bell Book and Candle (BBC). Although that visit only consisted of drinks, their whimsically quirky named cocktails had me dying to experience more of this place.

Last week, I finally found my chance. After spending all afternoon day drinking Honey Deuces and on the edge of our seats at the US Open, the mister and I needed a low key and relatively healthy way to end our night - Bell Book and Candle was obviously the perfect option.

Sorry Not Sorry
We started the night with a drink - even though we were filled to the gills with the Goose, there was no way we could pass up at least one of these creative concoctions. Looking through their cocktail list, I finally decided on the silent but deadly Sorry Not Sorry ($14), a basil infused watermelon juice number that masked a strong shot(s?) of Tito's. I'm truly sorry but not sorry, so much for a low key evening...

Zucchini Flowers
BBC is cooly unique because Chef and owner John Mooney actually grows most of the vegetables/fruits/herbs used in the dishes on a aeroponic roof-top tower garden at the top of the restaurant. Two appetizers on the menu that really highlight the freshness of these ingredients are the Heirloom Tomato Salad with rooftop grown Basil ($12) and the Zucchini Blossoms stuffed with goat cheese and wild mushrooms ($10). Both dishes were clean and fresh, like it came straight out of my Grandmother's kitchen.

Since I was so impressed by the quality and flavor of the veggies in the apps, I knew I had to taste more of the garden. For my entree, I ordered the Grilled and Roasted Seasonal Vegetable plate ($18), a colorful medley of  roasted cherry tomatoes, bell peppers, sliced zucchini and stuffed artichoke served with a flavorful romesco sauce. I felt healthier just looking at my plate.

For dessert, I was quasi bad and went in for the cute as a button mini chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwiches ($9). The presentation was incredibly festive, with matching mini squeegee bottles of caramel and chocolate sauce to enhance the already delicious sandwiches.

BBC serves high quality food that's simple and unpretentious but with very rich and interesting flavors. So if you are looking for good food in a place with a relaxed yet still hip vibe, Bell Book and Candle is the place to be.
