Chillin' w Paul Dano & Dagur Kári @ The Good Heart Press Day [New York]

by: Anne M. Raso

I was lucky enough to interview Icelandic filmmaker Dagur Kári and young acting sensation (and Manhattan native) Paul Dano for The Good Heart at Falco Ink's recent press day for it. Despite the fact that Kari is from Iceland, he wrote his third movie in English and it's a love letter to New York City. The bar featured in the movie appears to be in Noho (just a couple of blocks up from Canal Street) but those scenes were actually shot on an Icelandic soundstage. Surprisingly, it was not Kári's trip to NYC to promote his film and attend the Tribeca Film Festival that was delayed by the recent volcanic ash...it was his star Brian Cox, who is wonderful as the curmudgeonly, chauvinistic bar owner who takes in a homeless guy (Dano) as his sensitive barkeep. We have the feeling that this indie film, a runaway winner at last September's Toronto Film Festival, might just help get some homeless guys some employment!

Paul Dano is an actor on the way up and I first discovered him in a Lifetime film (2002's Too Young To Be A Dad) he conveniently leaves off his resume - since he is a "serious actor" these days! Where would we like to see him in next? We think he would be ideal to play Joey Ramone in the Fox Searchlight film based on Joey's bro Mickey Leigh/former Punk mag editor Legs McNeill's book I Slept With Joey Ramone. (By the way, as you might have read on the net, the authors want Johnny Depp to play Dee Dee Ramone in this film...but we think Depp should hold out and wait for the lead role of Dee Dee Ramone in the biopic from Ramone's ex-wife Vera Ramone King's book, Poisoned Heart: I Married Dee Dee Ramone.)

Check back for more recaps of NYC's best events and parties all week long!
